Ifá & Yorùbá Vocabulary Guide

Core terms, the 16 principal Odù, Òrìṣà names, and the ceremonial register of Yorùbá that practitioners encounter at every stage of the path.

Why vocabulary context matters in Ifá

In the Ifá tradition, words carry metaphysical weight. Learning a term in isolation — without its tonal shape, etymological root, and ritual register — gives an incomplete and sometimes misleading understanding. This guide provides each term with pronunciation context and usage notes, not just a gloss.

Note: These entries use standard Yorùbá orthography with full diacritical marks. If you find the marks difficult to parse at first, use the Tones Explained guide alongside this page.

The 16 Principal Odù Ifá (Odù Àkọ́ṣẹ́)

The Odù form the backbone of Ifá divination. There are 256 Odù in the complete corpus, but 16 are recognized as the principal (major) Odù from which all others derive. Their names and correct tones are central to liturgical competence.

Deepen your vocabulary with live instruction

Vocabulary acquired in isolation is fragile. Live instruction provides the pronunciation feedback, cultural context, and community use that turns a glossary entry into a living word. The Odù Ifá Studies track (Level 1B) covers this vocabulary systematically across its units.
